TheyThey say you are supposed to pick just one niche. That you can't be successful if you don't focus on just one. And to be honest they may be correct. Maybe I can't do both. That's something for us to find out in the future I suppose. But for now there's a reason why I have been doing both. For photographers there are always the "slow seasons". Which are usually dead winter until it warms up again late spring or early summer. That puts a financial strain on the whole operation especially if it is your only source of income. So here is where having more than one specialty comes into play....
Media days for Spring sports often start early in the year when it's still freezing out. Some of those sports are also played during the slow portrait seasons. Therefore when there would normally be absolutely nothing to shoot and make any money, I can fill in those times with Media days and Game coverage. Also, I have a love for sports and do genuinely enjoy shootings sporting events and following players journeys.
Portrait photography is more of my creative side that I still love and enjoy to do.
I have always been known to be creative and I come by it honestly. My grandmother was a great painter and some of the camera equipment I still have came from my grandfather and his time in the war. It is also another way in which get to watch families grow. And it is such a blessing to be able to capture families grow and flourish.
It's not like im doing anything that I dislike. I have a genuine love for each one. Now weddings I have a genuine dislike for and Id rather not do them, so I don't. Life is life and things may change to where I have to pick just one.... and one may even be weddings just to survive this economy. But until then I will continue to try my best to follow my passion and make my business successful my way.
